आयुर्वेद में शूल को मुख्यरुप से वात की व्याधि माना गया है । “न वातेन विना शूलम्‍” अर्थात वायु की विकृति के बिना शूल नहीं हो सकता । इसलिए वायु का संतुलन करने से किसी भी प्रकार का दर्द शांत हो जाता है । आयुर्वेद के प्राचीन ग्रंथों में वेदना को दूर करने के लिए विविध औषधियों का वर्णन किया गया है, जैसे रास्ना, निर्गुण्डी, हल्दी, भाँग, कलौंजी, सहिजन, गुग्गलु इत्यादि । आयुर्वेद के प्राचीन ग्रंथों में भाँग को उत्तम वेदनाहर बताया गया है । दुर्भाग्यवश भाँग पर भारत प्रतिबंध है, किन्तु सौभाग्य से भाँग के बीज को मान्यता दी गई है । “पेईन कीलर ड्रॉप्स” पूज्य गुरुजी के वर्षों के शोध-संशोधन का फल और वाराणसी में पूज्य गुरुजी के चिकित्सालय में अनेक रोगियों के उपर यह तैल प्रयोग करने पर बहुत लाभदायी सिद्ध हुआ है ।

In Ayurved, pain is said to be caused by Vaayu. “न वातेन विना शूलं”  meaning, there can not be pain unless Vaayu is malfunctioning or imbalanced.

That is why any kind of pain is eased when Vaayu is balanced. Ayurveda prescribes many medicines to cure pain, like Rasna, nirgundy, turmeric, cannabis, onion seeds, sahijan, guggulu,etc. Ancient Ayurveda texts state cannais to be the best pain-killer.
